Bose To Launch Smart Speaker in October

Have you ever wished that you could get better sound quality out of your Amazon Echo? Well imagine only a little longer as Bose are set to bring out their own smart speaker this year.

The US company is set to compete with the likes of Amazon’s Echo, Apple’s HomePod and Samsung’s upcoming Bixby speaker in the latest battle of the smarts.

Bose is launching the Home Speaker 500 in October and promises “size-defying performance with superior voice pickup and the power of Amazon Alexa now, other voice assistants to follow, and AirPlay 2 for simple streaming from Apple devices added in early 2019.”

The Bose Home Speaker 500 will have a small screen on the front to display album art but it will otherwise serve no function – we understand it will not be a touchscreen. There will be presets (up to six) which could be used to get you quickly to your favourite playlists on Spotify (for example) or even your favourite internet radio station however it’s not yet been made clear how those will be able to be set up.  DT assumes it will be through the Bose Connect app.

Bose admits that bringing out a smart speaker in 2018 isn’t the newest idea in town:

“Voice-controlled speakers aren’t new, and there are plenty of great options to choose from. But we had a different vision for ours, inspired by what we could uniquely do to make the experience better,” said Doug Cunningham, category manager in the Bose Consumer Electronics Division. “All of our new smart speakers double up on functionality. It takes just one Home Speaker 500 to deliver true stereo separation — there’s no need to pair two. Our Soundbar 700 and 500 are thin and discreet with jaw-dropping surround sound — whether you’re streaming Spotify, or watching a movie. They combine Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for unbeatable ease of use, can be mixed and matched to play in sync or separately, and with new Alexa functionality and more VPAs on the way, they’ll only get better over time.”

The Home Speaker 500 will retail for £399.95. All are sold at Bose retail stores,, and from authorised Bose dealers.
