Netflix Launch Synthesised Audio Description

The on demand streaming service Netflix have launched two new TV series featuring audio description for blind people with a difference.

Using the latest synthesised voice technology, the two new series feature computer voice rather than a human reading out the description.

Audio description is an additional audio track that describes the action on screen, in the same way subtitles display dialogue.

The two series are ‘A Shot In the Dark’ and ‘Fastest Car’ and feature a male and female synthesised voice respectively.

Speaking on RNIB Connect Radio’s ‘Tech Talk’ program, Erica Kram, project manager at Netflix said “The next few decades or so, synthesised voice technology is going to be so incredible. I’ve already seen the beginning of it. We’ve done a couple of experiments with synthesised audio description and while it’s good, I think it’s its just the beginning  and I’m really excited to see what it can do.”

  1. Does not sound too bad, might be more acceptable because it’s non-fiction. Would love to know the feedback from the blind community.
